Comprehensive Eye Exam, The Lakes, NV

Comprehensive eye exams are recommended for people of all ages, even if you have good vision. If you need eyeglasses or contact lenses to see clearly, then you need regular eye exams to check your vision and keep your prescription up to date.

A comprehensive eye exam, however, consists of much more than just a vision test. Many eye diseases have no symptoms early on but can lead to vision loss when left untreated. Only a comprehensive eye exam with a qualified optometrist will catch early warning signs of these diseases.

What to Expect at a Comprehensive Eye Exam

During your comprehensive eye exam in our office near The Lakes, Nevada, Dr. Ellen Merkin will perform a variety of tests to assess your vision and eye health. These tests will help her determine the best treatment plan for any issues found during the exam. Dr. Ellen Merkin will assess your vision and look for signs of eye diseases such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, cataracts, and dry eye.

We ensure the highest standard of eye care by using the latest technology, including the Optomap retinal exam. As part of your eye exam, your optometrist will diagnose any eye problems and develop a treatment or management plan tailored to your individual vision needs.

Patient History

During your appointment with Dr. Ellen Merkin, she will ask about any vision or eye health problems you may be experiencing, your overall health, your current medications, and any work-related or environmental factors that could affect your eyes. She will also ask about your family history of eye diseases, as genetics play a role in some eye diseases.

Visual Acuity

Your doctor will measure visual acuity, or your clarity or sharpness of vision, at 20 feet using the Snellen chart.

The refraction test determines if you have any refraction errors, such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism, and the lens power required to correct them.

Eye Focusing, Teaming, and Alignment Testing

Clear vision requires the eyes to work together and focus properly. To determine whether your eyes work well together, Dr. Ellen Merkin will assess your binocular vision and ocular motility. These tests discover issues that hinder your eyes’ ability to focus or work together as a team.

Annual Eye Health Evaluation

To better serve our patients in The Lakes, NV, and surrounding areas, Dr. Ellen Merkin uses a microscope and a range of other devices to thoroughly assess your eye health. Your eye doctor will measure your eye pressure and look for early warning signs of eye and systemic diseases that you may be unaware of. She may also dilate your pupils to closely examine the structures inside your eyes. At the end of your eye exam, your optometrist will prescribe eyeglasses or contact lenses if necessary and talk to you about any eye problems or health issues discovered during the exam.

The tests your eye doctor performs will vary based on your unique vision and eye care needs. While your optometrist will generally perform the tests listed above, other tests may be needed such as checking for color blindness or examining your retina and peripheral vision. Dr. Ellen Merkin may also use specialized instruments, such as a slit lamp, to take a closer look at the front and back of your eye.

After your exam, Dr. Ellen Merkin will go over the results with you and recommend treatment or follow-up care. This may include prescribing glasses or contacts, directing you to a specialist, or proposing lifestyle modifications for optimal eye health.

Adults should typically schedule a comprehensive eye exam every 1-2 years, depending on their age, health, and other considerations. If you’re at an increased risk for eye diseases, either due to your age or having medical conditions like diabetes, you may need to see an eye doctor more frequently.

Don’t hesitate to schedule your eye exam today and protect your eyes from disease and vision loss. Whether you’re having symptoms or just want peace of mind, our experienced eye care team is here to help.
