Optical Coherence Tomography

Retinal Eye Exam

Dr. Ellen Merkin utilizes the latest in technology to diagnose eye diseases and eye conditions.

Optical coherence tomography, or OCT, is one of the machines she uses. It provides a detailed scan of the retina, enabling her to diagnose many serious eye diseases and conditions in their early stages.

Optical Coherence Tomography

Many eye problems can develop without warning and progress with no symptoms. Early on, you might not notice any change in your vision. However, diseases such as macular degeneration, glaucoma, retinal tears or detachments, as well as other health problems such as diabetes and high blood pressure, can often be detected with a thorough exam of the retina.

To capture the images, the OCT uses a laser to produce high-resolution images of the retina, macula, and optic nerve.

You will be asked to sit in front of the OCT machine so that the eye scan can be completed. Nothing touches your eye, and the test is painless. The test takes about 5–10 minutes to complete.

How are Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) Scans Used?

Dr. Ellen Merkin will determine if an OCT scan should be part of your comprehensive eye exam.

If you have a family history of eye disease or other factors which could increase your risk of developing eye diseases, she may choose to utilize the OCT to conduct a retinal eye exam. If you have already been diagnosed with an eye disease, the OCT scan will provide Dr. Merkin with the information she needs to monitor your treatment.

If Dr. Ellen Merkin includes an OCT scan as part of your comprehensive eye exam, this scan can be used to diagnose, manage, or treat several eye diseases and conditions, including the following:

  • Age-related macular degeneration
  • Diabetic retinopathy
  • Drusen
  • Glaucoma
  • Macular edema
  • Macular hole
  • Neovascularization
  • Retinal detachment, occlusions, or bleeding
